The Championship originated in 2000 then referred to as “the Sub-Saharan Competition”.
In 2008 it was named the CANA Zone IV Invitational. At a meeting held in January 2009 during the competition in Johannesburg, South Africa it was decided to rename the competition “the CANA Zone III and IV Invitational Swimming Competition”. At a CANA Zone IV Bureau Meeting of 2013 and during the 12th Edition of the CANA Zone III and IV Championships held in April 2014 in Kampala, Uganda, both Zones agreed to separate the Championships and accordingly decided that each Zone should hold separate invitational events.
The CANA Zone III Bureau during its meeting held in August 2015 agreed that the Zone III Championships should commence with the first Edition hosted in Kampala, Uganda in 2015. Rwanda hosted the 2nd edition in 2016 followed by Tanzania which hosted the 3rd in 2017. The 4th edition was hosted by Sudan and the 5th edition by Kenya in 2019. Uganda hosted the 6th Edition in 2021 due to COVID-19, Tanzania hosted the 7th Edition in 2022 and now Rwanda will Host the 8th Edition championship this year 2023 with a new name of Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships.
